My husband found this restaurant in advance to us travelling out to Sri Lanka for our honeymoon. He knows I am a massive seafood fan and so this would be one to definitely go on the list!
The Ministry of Crab (great name!) in Colombo is a must-visit if you’re ever in the capital city. It is based in the Old Dutch Hospital and owned by two Sri Lankan cricketers – Sangakkara and Jayawardene. It’s also been awarded one of the 50 best restaurants in Asia in 2017. So go now!
We were lucky enough to be able to rock up and bag ourselves a table after a short wait, but it is advisable to book ahead if you can as they are a very popular place to eat. Take a look on booking through their website here.
The restaurant itself is super stylish – a big long room with long communal tables, large floral arrangements and bright colours. We sat at the bar whilst we were waiting for our table, taking it all in and drinking G&Ts. It has a great atmosphere, busy to keep it exciting but with lots of attentive staff on hand too.
Once at our table, and once I had let the waiter know we had to avoid gluten, we ordered a starter whilst deliberating over the main event. We went for a starter of Garlic Chilli Prawns – incredibly tasty and fresh with just the right amount of flavouring.
The Ministry of Crab menu, as you must have guessed by now, is very crab heavy! You can select the size of the crab you’d like to order and then decide on how it is cooked and the flavouring that is added. We went for a XL Chill Crab to share. Ministry of Crab make sure that they use the variety of chillies available in Sri Lanka to create a sweet and incredible depth of flavour. With it, we ordered some plain rice as a side.
It was incredible. The crab was cooked to perfection, with so much meat to get through. The chilli sauce accompanied it so well – I didn’t want it to end! This was probably just enough for the two of us to get through, but I could probably have well sat through the size up as well!
If I’m ever in Colombo again in the future, I will be definitely be returning here. Thank you Ministry of Crab for a delightful gluten free dinner during our honeymoon!
